Safe use of new technologies

Much has been written recently in the media about the use of the internet and the safety of online users, especially young people. A good report comes from the Office for Standards, Children's Services and Skills (OFSTED) in the UK about schools developing safe internet practices. It provides some sound insights about how to prepare for the safe use of digital technologies. The report states that the schools visited and surveyed "needed to focus more consistently on developing a curriculum for e-safety which builds on what pupils have learnt before and which reflects their age and stage of development; provide training which enables all staff, not just teachers, to support pupils; and helping families to keep their children safe."

Research meta-analysis

The Easter break in Australia was a great time to catch up on some reading. While reading a recent OECD report, I recalled an excellent piece of research commissioned by the US Department of Education that was done with SRI International and published late last year. The report, Evaluation of Evidence-Based Practices in Online Learning: A Meta-Analysis and Review of Online Learning Studies noted the findings of a range of empirical studies undertaken between 1996 and 2008.

Emergent digital literacy

An interesting recent research paper by Jay Blanchard and Terry Moore (2010) titled The Digital World of Young Children: Impact on Emergent Literacy from Arizona State University examined the emergent literacies arising from the plethora of new technologies to which young learners are exposed. As Blanchard (2010) suggests, 'This white paper begins a discussion about how digital media learning opportunities might be affecting emergent literacy skills..'

Educating the Net Generation

One of the best pieces of work about the level ICT usage and skill of university entrant students was completed for the Australian Learning and Teaching Council (ALTC) in 2009. The study, Kennedy, G. et al (2009) Educating the Net Generation collected data about university students' and staff use of ICT. Although the data were collected in late 2006 and 2007, they may remain relevant today

Using the Internet

From time to time, the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) produce research reports on topics relevant to the use of the Internet that are applicable to education. A full list of ACMA research reports can be seen at http://www.acma.gov.au/WEB/STANDARD/pc=PC_311301. Two reports of interest to education are the Trust and Confidence (2009) and Online Participation (2009) reports which are part of the Australia in the Digital Economy: research reports series.

Online assessment - technological issues

The Assessment & Teaching of 21st Century skills project was created by Cisco, Intel and Microsoft and launched at the Learning and Technology World Forum 2009 in London. Their draft paper on the Technological Issues for Computer Based Assessment is very comprehensive and a great read. The paper reviews previous research and development in two ways, describing the main tendencies in four continents (Asia, Australia, Europe and the US) and summarizing research on how technology advances assessment in some crucial dimensions (assessment of established constructs, extension of assessment domains, assessment of new constructs and in dynamic situations).

Building innovation: learning with technologies

Researchers with an interest in digital learning are now able to debate issues and share ideas following the launch today of the Digital Education Research Network (DERN). DERN has been established by the Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER) as a communications, discussion, networking and storage service for researchers in the area of digital learning.
