A recent thought provoking and very useful article addresses some important questions about the responsibilities associated with the data mining of student information. The emerging field of learning analytics has developed online systems that have become very accurate in predicting student retention and course performance. In an educational context, relations between students, lecturers and institution administrators have a learning focus that values academic success and so acting on large information sets using learning analytics becomes sensitive for all parties involved in learning.
