There have been few empirical research studies on how people engage and participate in MOOCs. Recent research provides some much needed insights into the issues of MOOC engagement and participation. Research emphasises in 'connectivism' that learning is viewed as residing in the connections that exist between people and digital artifacts within the ubiquitous Internet network. This new way of viewing learning has only been articulated since usage of the Internet has become possible which has led to new roles for online course leaders and learners.
